Microwave digestion, extraction and hydrolysis, mercury analysis
Sample preparation is the least developed step in chromatographic analytical procedures and is most prone to errors.
Many laboratories still use the Soxlet method, which was developed in 1879. Ethos X microwave extraction uses closed solvent heating vessels to extract above its atmospheric boiling point. Working at elevated temperature increases the solubility of the analyte of interest and reduces the viscosity of the solvent, which leads to more efficient sample preparation and shorter extraction time. Ethos X extraction is selective, fast and gives more accurate and precise results than other methods. Typical solvent extraction applications using a microwave oven include organic contaminants from the environmental matrix, determination of fat in food samples, contaminants from food, and extraction of plastic additives.
Determining total fat in food and feed matrices is a routine analysis that further relies on outdated matrix-dependent methods and outdated and technology.
In ETHOS X, hydrolysis and extraction are performed in one step and in a shorter time, providing higher productivity, lower cost of analysis with safe operation.
The ETHOS™ LEAN was specifically designed to provide high-quality closed-vessel acid digestion for labs with limited throughput needs. Whether you’re setting up a new lab, or improving your elemental analysis, a compact and economical solution for sample preparation is crucial. ETHOS™ LEAN matches the requirements of laboratories that approach microwave digestion without the needs of high-volume labs.
The MAXI-14 rotor operates in perfect synergy with easyTEMP sensor and easyCONTROL software to ensure complete and safe digestions of a wide array of matrices, such as organic and environmental samples in compliance with US EPA methods.

The range of sample types requesting microwave digester and analysis for trace metals has grown significantly in recent years. At the same time, sample workloads have increased, and turnaround time reduced. In addition, the development of collision cell ICP-MS has widened its applicability to more complex sample types placing additional demands on microwave acid digestion: its lower detection limits and fast analysis time require lower blank contribution and higher throughput in sample preparation techniques. In response to these demands, Milestone has developed the new microwave digestion oven ETHOS EASY™, specifically designed for closed vessel microwave acid digestion, with full control of all reaction parameters.
Microwave digestion system ETHOS EASY™ covers the whole range of samples from routine to high-end applications including US EPA method 3052 for sediments, sludges and soils and US EPA method 3015 as microwave digester of aqueous samples and extracts.

The ultraWAVE is based on the SRC (Single Reaction Chamber technology), invented by Milestone several years ago (Patents pending). SRC technology achieves extraordinary performance capabilities combining microwave heating with a high-pressure reactor which acts simultaneously as microwave cavity and vessel. The ultraWAVE chamber is sealed, pressurized, heated, cooled, vented, and opened via a dedicated touch-screen control terminal. Loading a rack of samples into the chamber is the only manual operation in an otherwise fully automated process of microwave-assisted sample preparation. The outer surfaces of the vessel remain at room temperature throughout the entire microwave heating cycle. As a result, the ultraWAVE is dramatically less labor intensive and easier to use compared to conventional microwave digestion systems.
Any combination of sample types (food, environmental, polymer, cosmetic, pharmaceutical, geological, chemical, and petrochemical) can be digested simultaneously; no need to batch samples into identical types. No method development is needed, as the same method can be used for nearly any sample. And for the first time, blanks and reference standards of any matrix can be digested alongside samples, enabling true in-run digestion quality control.

Featuring patented SRC technology ultraCLAVE™ enables processing of mixed matrices in the same run with different chemistries. ultraCLAVE™ uses vials and racks instead of vessels and rotors to remove the handling step in sample preparation setting new standards in microwave digestion. Eliminating this essential step ultraCLAVE™ completely changes the rules in microwave sample preparation enhancing overall efficiency in elemental analysis. Representing new generation of microwave reaction vessel with high pressure reactor ultraCLAVE™ is capable of running as many as 77 samples simultaneously at high temperature up to 300 °C and pressure up to 200 bar, thus enhancing lab efficiency.
SRC technology completely changes the rules of sample preparation. Instead of using a traditional digestion rotor, a rack and vials with loose-fitting caps are used, which greatly simplifies daily operation and reduces running costs. The ultraCLAVE™ racks are available in several configurations to accommodate varying sample throughput needs as well as large sample masses. Several racks are available and the selection of vials includes high-purity PTFE, quartz and disposable glass. The use of disposable glass vials eliminates the tedious cleaning step, improving lab workflow. Rack handling is as simple as hanging it in the system. Moreover, SRC technology allows for the use of a single method regardless of the sample type and amount, making it possible to digest different matrices together in the same run.

The challenges in mercury determination are well known to analysts who who often face a number of issues connected with tedious sample preparation process or the mercury analysis steps causing memory effect even after long cleaning cycles performed using latest generation of ICP-MS or cold vapor systems.
The DMA-80™ mercury determination system can analyze any matrix (solid, liquid or gas) without any pre-treatment or chemical additions in as few as 6 minutes in full compliance with EPA method 7473. Milestone defines the benchmark for direct mercury determination a wide range of industries: environmental, food energy, cement, cosmetics, agriculture, mining and petrochemical.
The DMA-80™ evo double beam dramatically increases the signal-to-noise ratio, which greatly improves the quantification limit, enabling accurate and precise mercury determination even at the ppt level. This increased signal stability improves the reproducibility and reliability of analysis even at low concentrations.
A single calibration, done using either liquid or solid references materials, suits all wide variety of samples, over a wide concentration range: from ppt to ppm, with concentrations ranging from ppm to ppt. The DMA-80™ evo’s calibration provides long-term reliability thanks to the stability of the system and the long lifetime of the catalyst tube and gold amalgamator. These features allow you to eliminates the daily calibrations often required by conventional instrumentation.
